https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYc-7lxDrNU&t=557s

law = "an ordination of REASON (vs mere subjective will of superior) for the COMMON GOOD..." (St Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologiae, lallae, Q. 90, a.4)

4 kinds of laws: 1. eternal (in God's mind, His plan for creation) 2. natural (inherent inclination, [cf: synderesis] towards our ULTIMATE END) 3. divine positive (revealed in sacred scriptures 4. human (particular to a city, state, nation ordained for their local common good)

synderesis: an example -- a japanese enemy hero

Re: Captain Isao Yamazoe Fr: facebook page of Oustanding Filipinos Worldwide (something like that anyway)

Captain Isao Yamazoe also known as "Captain Yamasoy" is a WWll Japanese officer who ordered his men to not abuse the locals-including prisoners.
Captain Isao Yamazoe arrived in the town of Dulag, Leyte in the Philippines in 1943. He was a Japanese soldier, and he was there as an occupying enemy but he left as a Filipino hero.
His friendship with the locals saw him playing judo and even serenading with them. To foster friendly ties between locals and the Japanese,"Captain Yamasoy" went as far as initiating "morning calisthenics (radio taiso), athletics (tennis and basketball), and cultural shows, dances and movie screenings for the entertainment of the residents.
He is a good leader, smiling captain, and friend to everyone. When Captain Yamasoy got word that a Filipino guerrilla unit was planning to attack his garrison, he was worried about civilian casualties.
He contacted the guerrilla unit and asked them to meet him outside of town so that no innocents would get hurt in the battle. They agreed but ambushed him on the way, believing they were getting rid of one more tyrant. After Captain Yamasoy died, though, a new commander took over. All of Yamasoy’s programs were canceled.
Today, there is a shrine to his memory in the city, dedicated to the one man from the enemy army who treated them like human beings.

what is good? (st thomas)

source: kevin keiser, MA in thomistic studies (read almost all his works, teacher), https://www.quora.com/search?q=what%20is%20the%20definition%20of%20good%20by%20st%20thomas%20aquinas

good (metaphysical vs moral) = perfectivum alterius = the good is that which is perfective of another being

Good is one being's ability to bring another being to some sort of COMPLETION, to give it the wherewithal to fulfill its POTENTIAL or one of its potentials. (Summa Theological, 1, q. 5.)

The Ultimate Good is that being the most of all grants other beings the ability to come to their COMPLETION or to fulfill their POTENTIAL.

is human nature good or evil?: the SYNDERESIS rule of st thomas aquinas

>synderesis [<Gk. syn = with + terein = to guard closely] rule = we are innately born with a tendency to do good & avoid evil (the basic principle of the natural law) -- St. Thomas Aquinas

--concurred with by CS Lewis in The Abolition of Man (1943) where he defended OBJECTIVE VALUE & the NATURAL LAW vs moral relativism (Wikipedia). in the last part of this book, he quotes moral dictates from all over the world and concluded that TAO is the moral law common to us all, astoundingly common all over the world

vs. St Augustine: We are born into SIN c/o Adam's Fall.

--concurred with by Sigmund Freud: Natural SELFISHNESS becomes moralized by upbringing and socialization [eros & thanatos],  "given human beings propensity to destroy life in war, exploit other sentient creatures for our own ends, misuse sex, indulge in antisocial behaviour, and prefer the X box 360 to education"
