conscience: catechism: quotes

part 3: life in christ
section 1: man's vocation: life in the spirit
chapter 1: the dignity of the human person
article 1: man: the image of god

"the human person participates in the light and power of the divine Spirit. by his REASON .... by his FREE WILL.... (ccc 1704) by virtue of his SOUL and his spiritual powers of intellect and will, man is endowed with freedom .... (ccc 1705). by this reason, MAN RECOGNIZES THE VOICE OF GOD.... EVERYONE IS OBLIGED TO FOLLOWD THIS LAW, which makes itself heard in CONSCIENCE and is fulfilled in the love of god and neighbor. living a moral life bears witness to the DIGNITY of the person." (ccc 1706)

re: "moral conscience" (... art 6)
# 1776 "deep within his CONSCIENCE man discovers a law which he has not laid upon himself but which he must obey. its VOICE, ever calling him to LOVE and to do what is GOOD and to avoid evil, sounds in HEART AT THE RIGHT MOMENT... For man has in his heart a law inscribed by god... his conscience is man's MOST SECRET CORE and his sanctuary. there he is alone with god whose VOICE echoes in his depths' (GS 16)."

re: "the judgment of conscience"
# 1777 "... when he listens to his conscience, the prudent man can hear god speaking."

re: "the judgment of conscience"
[which i renamed "how to hear god speak" in my email message]
(1) a lay friend asked: "is this the holy spirit?"
i replied: where the spirit is, the father and the son are & vice versa. but we usually attribute enlightenment and being pricked by our conscience to the spirit, the sanctified. the father is creator and the son the redeemer. but all participate in all these functions.

(2) a priest friend wrote:
"Jun,
This reminds me of Fr. Wim Vergoossen, SVD our rector in Cebu. When I came to Tagaytay while on vacation from Taiwan last 1990, i saw him here in VCR. Bingi na siya at that time. Paul, his caregiver was telling me that he was profundly deaf na, and had become really irritable and pararnoid. He used a slate to read any message anybody would tell him. I wrote on it: How are you Father? Do you still hear God? After he read the message, he looked up at me and i saw tears in his eyes. I bet he heard Him well. Conscience or not, He dwells in us and talks to us even beyond the ears can hear. Thanks for your beautiful messages. God bless"

i replied (in part): "yes, xxx, wisdom 12:1 says "for your immortal spirit is in all things." [this also partly responds to question #1 above]

my additional reply to my friend who asked about the holy spirit:
"hi, xyz.
(1) it's good you wrote again
coz i don't think i fully answered
your earlier question as i was thinking about it yesterday on my way home. our conscience & the HS are not the same. i see conscience as our spiritual "6th sense" that enables us to detect whether something is good or bad. it
is present in all, christians and pagans alike, coz that is part of god's imprint in us as his creatures. i think the HS helps
in enlightening the conscience.
(2) no. the HS is not the super-ego. the super-ego, based on freudian psychology, is composed of society's "do's & don'ts" as mostly relayed to us by our parents. the HS is over and above
culture and social norms.
well, i'm not really a moral theologian & i did not reach theology in the seminary, but i'm just sharing with you what i know.
the more i study morality, the more i find it intresting coz it's one of the connecting points between religion and psychology.
your questions are thought-provoking. thanks coz they also trigger my neurons to think :-) feel free to ask & question.
i'll tell you if i also don't know :-)"

my friend xyz replied:
"Hahaha, pasensya na Jun, sometimes I do pick up ideas here and there and try to connect. As if I'm looking if it will fit and see any pattern. As you said "connecting points between religion and psychology". Rest muna for our neurons. Thanks for the clarification Jun :)"
